Marriage preparation
Congratulations. You have decided to get married. Perhaps you feel that
there are questions you would like to ask about your future life
together, and issues that need to be talked through.
That is certainly what I felt when I married 11 years ago, which is why
I decided as a psychologist to offer marriage preparation to future
newlyweds. Discussing a broad range of important topics can help you
and your partner to understand your individual styles and learn
communication and conflict resolution skills to enhance your
relationship. Pre-marriage sessions offer a unique opportunity to
celebrate your strengths as a couple and encourage exploration of areas
that could create problems later on, such as communication,
problem-solving, religion, family and friends, careers, cohabitation,
parenting, sexuality and finances.

Couples who have been married more than two years can give their
marriage a check-up with the REFOCCUS
Marriage Enrichment Inventory. It contains a set of five relationship
questionnaires with accompanying discussion questions which are helpful
in giving your marriage a boost.
